An Insight to Canadian Student Visa

Canada has always been an attraction to international students for its high-quality education system and multicultural society. Let us explain further about the Canadian Student Visa.

You may have received an offer letter from your dream Canadian university or still shortlisting which countries to study. Whatever the reason is, seeking the idea of receiving an international education itself is a unique idea. However, there are lots of technical difficulties involved. After receiving the offer letter, you must follow each step of the immigration policies carefully, with one of the essentials being obtaining a valid student visa on time.

The Canadian government provides a Study Permit and a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to international students who have already received an offer letter from a DLI-registered Canadian institution. A study permit is issued by the CIC (Citizen and Immigration) to international students, and it remains valid till the student remains enrolled in the course. Do not confuse a study permit and a visa. A study permit is a visa; instead, it is accompanied by an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or a visitor visa.

Cost of Canadian Student Visa:

International students are required to pay a student permit fee of CAD 150(BDT 10,200) while submitting their application forms online/offline. The Canadian visa application fee rate constantly fluctuates due to the time-to-time exchange rates. Thus it is better to check the rates on the CIC website before the application.

Additionally, every student will also need to pay CAD 85 for the Biometric Test.

Canadian Student Visa Application Process:

There are a few mandatory Canadian student visa requirements that each applicant must meet before applying for a student permit in Canada. The most requirements that set the criteria to be eligible for the application process are enlisted below:

  • The applicant must have an offer letter issued by a Designated Learning Institute (DLI) before applying for the visa.
  • The student must demonstrate adequate funds to pay the tuition fee and living costs in Canada
  • Police Clearance
  • He/she must be in good health

Essential Documents:

During the Canadian student visa process, the following documents are needed to be submitted:-

  1. Letter of Acceptance from a DLI
  2. A Valid Passport
  3. Passport-sized photographs
  4. Immigration Medical Examination Report
  5. Proof of Sufficiency of Funds
  6. Proof of English Proficiency
  7. Medical Certificate
  8. Study Plan

Financial solvency can be proven by submitting any one of the following methods:

  • Current/Savings Account bank statements (Last six months’ bank statements)
  • Bank Draft in convertible currency
  • Documents for transferring the money to Canada (Only if the student has already sent the tuition fees).

Canadian Student Visa Processing & Timeline:

According to the statement given by the CIC, there is no time frame mentioned. Generally speaking, applications may take 2 to 3 weeks but are reviewed within a time frame of 90 days period at all costs. Student Direct Stream (SDS) allows applicants to get their Student Permits within 20 calendar days for a nominal fee of CAD 150.

Due to this pandemic situation, the CIC has recommended all Bangladeshi Nationals submit the Canadian student visa application online. The following procedures are meant for online application submission. Before submission, kindly ensure that you have an electronic copy of all your documents (the minimum file size is 4MB for each section) and a credit/debit card for a successful transaction.

Creating a Document Checklist:

 Before the online application, a list of instructions and a list of questions are provided to applicants. After reading the instructions carefully and answering the questions honestly, the website offers a personalized document checklist required to submit via the online tool.

Taking the Biometrics Test:

 Applicants will have to set up an appointment and appear to submit their fingerprints and photographs at the nearest collection service point.

Set up your account on the official website to proceed with the application.

  • Fill up the relevant visa application form and upload the required documents.
  • Pay the processing fee.

The status of your application can be checked through the My CIC portal of the application website. Once your visa application is granted the application is accepted, you will receive notification from the Canadian government and passport submission requests. After receiving the passport submission request, the student should go to VFS in person to submit the passports. When the study permit is granted, the additionally required eTA or visa is automatically issued. After the student receives the visa, he/she must follow the quarantine rules to fly. Kindly note that quarantine rules are subject to change. It is the student\’s utmost responsibility to follow the IRCC website to update any newly implemented regulations.
