Know The Format Of The IELTS Exam
It is very important for you to know the IELTS exam format. You must know the content of the test, the type of questions, tasks in each section, timing, and the answer sheets beforehand. Practice is the only way to master these skills. You must sit for as many mock tests as you can.
There are 4 sections in IELTS Academic/General Training Exam:-
IELTS LISTENING
The exam duration of the listening test is only 30 minutes. You will hear four recordings played which are done by native English Speakers.
a) In the listening section you will normally hear a conversation between 2 people set in an everyday social context
b) A monologue (Spoken by an individual) is set in an everyday social context for instance a description of the facilities in the area.
c) A discussion of up to 4 people usually set in an educational or training context.
d) A monologue on an academic subject for instance a university lecture.
The Listening section may also include; A plan, a map, diagram labeling, matching, sentence completion, multiple choice, forms, a note, a table, a flow-chart, a summary completion,
NB: The duration of the IELTS Academic and General Training Exam is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
IELTS READING
The reading section lasts for 1 hour and has 40 questions.
The reading texts may be taken from; journals, newspapers, magazines, and books.
The question types include; multiple choice, identifying the author’s views, matching information, identifying information, matching headings, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, and matching features.
IELTS WRITING
The writing section lasts for 1 hour (60 minutes).
The writing section has 2 tasks:
Task 1 (150 words in 20 minutes): This is normally a graph, chart or diagram, or table. You will be asked to summarize, describe or explain the given information.
Task 2 (250 words in 40 minutes): You will be presented with a topic and you will be required to write an essay giving your point of view.
IELTS SPEAKING
The Speaking section lasts for 11 to 14 minutes.
The section has 3 parts;
Part 1 (4 to 5 Minutes): A conversation where the examiner asks you general questions about yourself. The topics you may range from family, home, work, and studies to hobbies.
Part 2 (3 Minutes): The examiner you give you a cue card that has a topic you will have to talk about. Thereafter, you are given 1 minute to prepare and then speak for about 2 minutes. When you finish speaking, the examiner will ask you one or two questions on the same topic.
Part 3 (4 to 5 Minutes): The examiner will ask you more questions related to the topic in Part 2
IELTS MOCK TEST PRACTICE
Different people practice differently. Therefore, identify your weaknesses and then practice improving those areas where you are weak.
